Eve was Shamed

Eve was ShamedBy Baroness Helen Kennedy QC
Review by Ellie (Law)

Helena Kennedy鈥檚 Eve was Shamed was a fantastic introduction to the law, in that it was relevant, interesting and easy to read. I knew the law is important in society, but it wasn鈥檛 until I read this book that I realised exactly how much impact the law had on people everyday, not just those in court. It also introduced me to some issues within our modern legal system, and suggestions as to how they can be changed to benefit everyone. Particularly with a view to feminism and women鈥檚 equality, the solutions to major issues such as sentencing and punishment weren鈥檛 as obvious as I previously thought; they are much more complex and nuanced, and the book really developed how I thought about the law and helped me form more sophisticated opinions.

Her earlier work, , covers a lot of the same topics and issues as 鈥淓ve was shamed鈥 – however this most recent publication includes more relevant data, studies and commentaries on the current political climate, such as the 鈥淢e Too鈥 movement. Her vast experience as a barrister also provided insight into the realities of a career in law, and the challenges and rewards of working in such a field.

Even if you are not considering a future working in the law, it is still an excellent read – it challenged some of my fundamental thoughts on law and justice, and helped me consider how our justice system is failing women, what we can do to change this.
