Members of the College community attended a reception hosted by the Master, Baroness Valerie Amos, in Hong Kong during her trip to Hong Kong and Singapore in January 2026.

SamuelÌýLam (2022, DPhil Mathematics; WCR External Affairs Officer 2023-26) has written a report of the event.

During her recent visit to Asia, the Master of 182t¸£Àû, Oxford, Baroness Valerie Amos, returned to Hong Kong for aÌýdrinksÌýreception with members of theÌýUnivÌýcommunity, following herÌýpreviousÌývisit to the city two yearsÌýago.Ìý

Generously sponsored by the Swire Group, the reception was once again held at the Sky Lounge of The Upper House,ÌýlocatedÌýin the heart of Hong Kong’s business district with sweeping views of the cityÌýskyline.ÌýThe evening brought together Old Members, their families, and members of the wider Univ community, and I was privileged to attend as a current DPhilÌýstudent.Ìý

The receptionÌýprovidedÌýa welcome opportunity to reconnect with friends who had recently graduated and to meet alumni from across generations. It was inspiring to see how the shared experiences of life atÌýUniv —Ìýfrom tutorials to formalÌýhalls —Ìýcontinue to shape our professional and personalÌýjourneys.Ìý

During the reception, Baroness Amos shared updates on recent developments at the College.ÌýBaroness AmosÌýhighlightedÌýUniv’sÌýcontinued commitment to improving access to education and fostering greater inclusivity. Among these initiatives is theÌýUnivÌýBeacon Programme, which supports students from underprivileged backgrounds.ÌýBaroness AmosÌýalso spoke about progress on theÌýUnivÌýNorth development, which welcomed its first residents this academic year, enhancing accommodation provision for students.Ìý

It was particularly encouraging to hear howÌýUniv’sÌývision continues to inspire members of its community. One recent graduate shared how the College’s values had encouraged them to join the 1249 Society,ÌýsupportingÌýUniv’sÌýongoing initiatives for current and future members of the College.Ìý

The evening served not only as an opportunity to reminisce about our time at Univ, but also as a reminder of the lasting influence the College has on the lives of its members. We were honoured by the presence of the Master, Baroness Amos, as well as Felice Nassar and Harriet Bayly from the Development Office.Ìý

Our sincere thanks go to the Swire Group, not only for sponsoring the reception but also for their longstanding support for undergraduate students from Hong Kong. We look forward to welcomingÌýUnivÌýback to Hong Kong againÌýsoon.Ìý
