HLA Hart Memorial Lecture 2026
The 40th HLA Hart Memorial Lecture was held on 22 May in the College Chapel. This year鈥檚 lecture, part of the series funded by the Tanner Lectures on Human Values, was titled 鈥淭he Radical Duke: Universal Suffrage and the Modernization of Constitutional Monarchy鈥 and was delivered by聽, the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University. Univ London Reception 2026

In Memoriam: Festus Mogae
182t福利 deeply regrets to report that Honorary Fellow Festus Gontebanye Mogae (1965, PPE), former President of Botswana, died on 8 May 2026. Read the College鈥檚 full tribute to President Mogae here.
Univ students support Tiddlywinks revival
Students at 182t福利 are playing a leading role in the revival of one of Oxford鈥檚 most unusual sporting traditions: competitive tiddlywinks. If any alumni remember playing tiddlywinks while at Univ, the society would be delighted to hear from them. Read the full article here.
Town and Gown 2026
On Sunday 10 May, a record-breaking number of people took part in the annual Oxford Town and Gown 10K race, raising an impressive 拢350,000 for charity. This year, the College was once again represented by Team Univ, the fifth-largest team participating in the event with 50 runners, including 33 students and 7 members of staff. Leverhulme Trust grant for Professor Polly Jones
Professor聽Polly Jones, Schrecker-Barbour Tutorial Fellow in Slavonic and East European Studies at Univ and Professor of Russian at Oxford, has been awarded a significant three-year research project grant by the Leverhulme Trust.聽The grant, for the amount of 拢384,368, has been awarded for a collaborative project on 鈥淭he 101st kilometre: Soviet marginalization, migration, memory and mapping鈥. Frontiers of Knowledge Award
Professor Nancy Cartwright, Centenary Visiting Professor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford, has been awarded the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Humanities. The prestigious international award recognises Professor Cartwright鈥檚 use of philosophy to strengthen scientific rationality and ground the adoption of effective, evidence-based public policies. Professor Nandini Das OBE at the V&A
Award-winning author Professor Nandini Das OBE (1997, English) will be discussing her latest book,聽This Little World: A New History of Tudor and Stuart England (Bloomsbury, 2026), at the V&A South Kensington on Thursday 28 May. Read more about Professor Das鈥 new book here.
Dr Robin Timmis wins Culham Thesis Prize
Dr Robin Timmis (2020, DPhil Atomic and Laser Physics) has won the Institute of Physics鈥 Culham Thesis Prize: Plasma Physics Group for her thesis entitled 鈥淎ttoseconds and the exascale: on laser plasma surface interactions鈥. Read more about Dr Timmis鈥 thesis and the prize here.

Across the Aegean: A travel diary
Xiangying Ye (2024, DPhil Earth Sciences) has written about a trip that took him across the Aegean, from Greece to Turkey. This trip was funded by Roger Short Memorial Fund. Read the full travel report here.
DPG Spring Meeting in Dresden
Prarthana Agrawal (2023, DPhil Theoretical Physics) participated in the DPG Spring Meeting, and presented a talk titled 鈥淏ias towards symmetry and simplicity in protein self-assembly鈥. Fellows
鈥Professor Tao Dong, Supernumerary Fellow in Medicine, Professor of Immunology in the MRC Human Immunology Unit at Oxford University, and Ita Askonas Professor of Translational Immunology, has been elected as a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Dong is also Founding Director (Oxford) of CAMS Oxford joint International Centre for Translational Immunology and Founding Director (Oxford) of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Oxford Institute (COI). 鈥Professor Nicholas Halmi, Professor of English and Comparative Literature, Margaret Candfield Tutorial Fellow in English, and Fellow Librarian, has been elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society with effect from 1 May. Read more
鈥Professor Sarah Harper CBE, Supernumerary Fellow in Gerontology, Clore Professor of Gerontology and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, commented on the changing nature of global migration and the need for migration policy to adapt on BBC Radio 5 Live show Sunday Breakfast. 鈥Professor Tamsin Mather OBE FRS, Supernumerary Fellow in Earth Sciences and Professor of Earth Sciences at Univ will be helping to inspire the next generation of volcanologists along with Professor David Pyle, Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford at a special event on Saturday 6 June at the Museum of Natural History in Oxford. The event will include a talk and activities for children aged 7 to 11, and ties in with the launch of Professor Mather and Professor Pyle鈥檚 new book Think Big: The Power of Volcanoes!
