Portraits in College

182t福利 Oxford PortraitsOur Archivist, Dr Robin Darwall-Smith (1982, Classics) has certainly had a busy time lately. Not only has he just completed the cataloguing of the complex collections of papers relating to the estates which Univ has owned in times past 鈥 the results of that herculean task can be seen on our page 鈥 he has also helped greatly in the production of our new page.

The page is a counterpart to our existing Portraits in Hall page and details a further 16 of our most important and noteworthy portraits.

group portrait featuring Sir Michael Sadler, Master of Univ from 1923-34Amongst these is a fascinating group portrait featuring Sir Michael Sadler, Master of Univ from 1923-34, and the first 鈥渙utsider鈥 to be elected to the post since 1692. Having declined the offer to sit for a more traditional portrait, the resulting group that Sir Michael insisted upon also includes three future Masters – John Wild (Fellow 1933鈥45 and Master 1945鈥51), Arthur Goodhart (Fellow 1931鈥51 and Master 1951鈥63), and John Maud (Fellow 1929鈥39 and Master 1963鈥76).

In addition to 鈥渢humbnail鈥 images of each portrait, and details of artist (where known) and sitter, the page also features a larger gallery of images; we hope you enjoy this new page.
