Selma V Forkosch Prize
Dr Sophie Smith, Tutorial Fellow in Political Theory, was awarded the annual Selma V Forkosch Prize by The Journal of the History of Ideas for the best article published in the University of Pennsylvania Press journal in 2019.
The article, 鈥淭he Language of 鈥楶olitical Science鈥� in Early Modern Europe鈥� explores what it meant to speak of 鈥減olitical science鈥� in Aristotle鈥檚 key writings on politics and ethics, in medieval Latin commentaries on them, in early modern works on the theme, and in the views that Hobbes constructed in response.
The selection committee praised her article, “She examines with deep learning and great subtlety how ideas of the 鈥減olitical鈥� and of 鈥渟cience鈥�…came to be understood in combination as an intelligible object of its own.”
teaches undergraduate papers in the history of political thought from antiquity to the present as well as also teach graduate classes on feminist theory, on methodology in the history of political thought, and on some key concepts in contemporary political theory. Her two main areas of research are early modern political ideas and the history of feminist politics and political theory. She has further research interests in Ancient Greek and Roman political thought, the relationship between philosophy and imaginative literature, and the history of environmental political thinking.
