In memoriam: Gwynne Ovenstone MBE
The College deeply regrets to report that Gwynne Ovenstone MBE, Assistant College Secretary from 1947-50 and College Secretary from 1950-87, died on Saturday 19 June 2021 aged 97. A tribute from Dr Leslie Mitchell .

鈥 A special Themed Issue of the open access Chemistry journal Molecules聽in honour of Professor Barry Potter, Supernumerary Fellow in Pharmacology, entitled From Cell Signalling to Anticancer Drug Discovery聽was published during 2020/21.
鈥 Professor Polly Jones, Schrecker-Barbour Tutorial Fellow in Slavonic and East European Studies and Professor of Russian, contributed to the programme: Russia vs the World: From tsarist rule to the Russian Revolution and beyond聽on Channel 5, 19 March, alongside Guardian foreign correspondent and author Luke Harding (1987, English).
鈥 Sk煤li Magn煤sson (1997, Law) was elected Parliamentary Ombudsman of Iceland on 26 April 2021, serving as the President of the Reykjavik District Court at the time.
鈥 On 28 April Professor Daniel Freeman, Supernumerary Fellow, discussed Vaccine Hesitancy, Mistrust and Conspiracies聽with Jon Snow as part of an online conversation series organised by Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry.
鈥 In May 2021 Professor Catherine Holmes, A.D.M. Cox Old Members鈥 Fellow and Praelector in Medieval History, gave a lecture to the Royal Historical Society: The Making and Breaking of Kinetic Empire: Mobility, Communication and Political Change in the Eastern Mediterranean, c.950-1100 C.E.
鈥 Baroness Amos has joined the England Cricket Board as an Independent Non-鈥婨xecutive Director.
鈥 On 25 May Dr Mirela Ivanova, Junior Research Fellow in Medieval History, appeared on BBC Free Thinking on Radio 3 talking about the National Archaeology Museum of Bulgaria and usable pasts, alongside Tahmima Anam, Tom Holland and Thorsten Opper.
鈥 Grace Annetts (2019, Medicine) competed for Oxford in the 121st Women鈥檚 Varsity Hockey match and won. Grace is a second year reading medicine with an interest in neurosciences.
鈥 Dr Laura Varnam, Lecturer in Old and Middle English Literature, returned as an invited guest on the podcast Backlisted, talking about the Old English epic Beowulf聽and Robert Shearman鈥檚 short story collection We All Hear Stories in the Dark, with illustrations by Univ Old Member Reggie Oliver (1971, Classics).
鈥 Baroness Amos appeared on BBC Woman’s Hour on 21 June to discuss “the power of giving away power” with Matthew Barzan, former US Ambassador to the UK and Sweden. Listen .
鈥 Dr Emily Jones, Supernumerary Fellow in Public Policy and Director of the Global Economic Governance Programme, has been working to define and address the major concerns, challenges and opportunities around UK trade policy as the United Kingdom enters a new era of trade after leaving the European Union. 鈥 Professor Tamsin Mather, Supernumerary Fellow in Earth Sciences, has been elected a member of the Academia Europaea. Founded in 1988, the aim of the Academia is to promote European research, advise governments and international organisations in scientific matters, and further interdisciplinary and international research.
